Requirements and Scholarships

Entrance Requirements

Students considering music as their major should during their freshman year:
• Enroll in private instruction in one applied area
• Participate in one large ensemble
• Begin the Theory sequence of courses

Students will need to audition for placement in a large ensemble and to determine appropriate private instructor. Ensemble auditions are generally held during Orientation Weekend. An alternate day may be scheduled with the ensemble director.

Please note: this audition is for placement only and not entrance to the major. Full admission to the major happens at the end of one year of study.

Scholarships

Students do not need an audition to be a music major or minor, but they do need to audition if they would like to apply for a music scholarship. Music scholarships are available for music majors (new and transfer students), music minors and non music majors. The Department of Music offers three general types of scholarships.

Music Student Scholarship

Available by audition to music majors and minors only. Scholarship amount is based on performing ability and music interest. Appointment times for auditions are made through the Music office (530) 226-4507. For questions, call Shelley or Karen in the music office.
