Keys for Success

Survey the thousands of possibilities out there. Investigate and list every career that you find the least bit interesting. To help, we have the EUREKA Career Information System on our computers in the computer lab and in the library. It is a great tool as it will help you explore various types of careers, what skills and abilities are necessary to succeed in those careers and the projected employment outlook for each occupation. It also has a program called MicroSkills that will help you identify your abilities and preferences; matching them with occupations that may interest you.
Take inventory of your own talents, abilities, likes and dislikes. Do you have the personality, prior experience and portable skills necessary to enjoy and succeed in the occupations you have listed?
Evaluate what additional skills or experience you may need. Ask people who know you well if they can see you working in that capacity. You may want to schedule an interest interview with someone working in that area. Interest interviews are great tools to get a sense of what it would take to be employed in that occupation. Contact Career Services for more information on Interest Interviews.
Plan! Develop a strategy to get where you want to go. Working toward a career takes time and effort. Talk to others who have succeeded and ask them what they did or what they wish they had done to help them get where they are. Set goals. It may take weeks, months or years but each experience along the way will add skills, confidence and knowledge that will serve to equip you. Don't forget to pray. "A man's heart plans his way, but God directs his steps." Proverbs 16:9 (NKJV)
