July 17, 2008
REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University received a $10,000 grant from the Sierra Pacific Foundation to support the construction of the baseball stadium on the Redding campus. A member of the Foundation awarded the check to Simpson's head baseball coach, Rick Bosetti, Thursday afternoon at the future baseball stadium site.
As the largest timber company in California, Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) partnered with Simpson University on the baseball stadium project as it fits with their mission.
Mark Lathrop, Community Relations Manager for SPI, said, "Sierra Pacific Industries feels that the baseball stadium project at Simpson University fits well with our mission and priority of providing support for sports and education programs that benefit the community as a whole. We see this as a good fit for Redding."
Bosetti said he is pleased that the SPI Foundation saw the value in the baseball stadium project and awarded the grant to the university.
"Sierra Pacific Industries recognized the significance and uniqueness of this project, and how it can have a positive and lasting impact on the community," said Bosetti. "We are very grateful to have received this grant. This project has the potential to change the face of baseball in the north state."
Simpson University partnered with Add Some Color, Inc., a non-profit organization reaching young people through athletic endeavors, and Redding Youth Baseball through the City of Redding, to attain the funding.
In re-constructing the baseball stadium on Simpson's campus, the university's goal is to make baseball more accessible for local youth, easier for youth teams to schedule events and offer teams an opportunity to expand their programs. The Simpson baseball park will be free from tobacco and alcohol exposure.
In addition to the grant from SPI, Simpson University was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from The California Endowment, bringing the total gifts and commitments from community members, businesses and foundations to $351,000 to date.
Simpson University is a Christian liberal arts university offering undergraduate, graduate and teaching credential programs. Simpson's athletic department offers intercollegiate programs in men's and women's soccer, golf, basketball, and cross-country; men's baseball and women's softball and volleyball.
