For Immediate Release
April 25, 2007
REDDING, Calif. - Friday, May 2, nearly 650 Shasta County Kindergarten students will visited the Simpson University campus as part of the second annual Kindercaminata. The event took place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and was sponsored by Simpson University, Bank of Commerce Redding, Shasta Reading Council and the College OPTIONS Partnership.
Kindercaminata (derived from the German word for children, kinder, and the Spanish word for walk, caminata) is a children's career fair, generally held on a college campus. The event, which was first organized in Orange County in 1994, is geared towards introducing continuing education to young children.
Kindergarten students rotated through interactive career stations, some of which included, the Redding Police Department, Bank of CommerceRedding, Cal Trans, the US Forest Service Smokejumpers, and Shasta Builders Exchange. Parents were encouraged to attend with their children.
Buffy Tanner of College OPTIONS, said, "Kindercaminata has four goals: to expose children and their parents to a college campus environment, to allow students to explore a variety of career fields, to connect those careers with the idea that additional education is necessary for those jobs, and to let them know they can start on their path to college today by doing well in school."
