November 14, 2007

REDDING, Calif. - Nearly 1,800 packed the Shasta College gymnasium to watch the Simpson University Red Hawks play Brody Angley and Santa Clara Broncos last night.

The Broncos were marked as the first Division 1 basketball team to ever play in Shasta County.

Angley scored 10 points for his team as Santa Clara beat the Red Hawks 82-55.

Brody Angley was recruited by the Santa Clara Broncos on a full-ride basketball scholarship from Enterprise High School in Redding in 2004. As he begins his senior year at Santa Clara, this game allowed him the opportunity to play one game in front of his hometown family.

Simpson University Athletic Director Joe Griffin said, "This game was a win-win for the community. Our guys played hard and enjoyed the challenge of playing against a Division 1 team. I'm glad that we had the opportunity to host Agley. Everything I've heard about him was true. He’s a great player and has a great family."

Simpson University forward, Alex Nixon said, "We took the game seriously. For us, it was about gaining respect."

A halftime ceremony was dedicated to Angley and his family honoring his father who died in May after having stomach cancer. Former Enterprise athletic director, Jim Schwerdt announced that the high school was renaming its holiday basketball tournament to the Jamie Angley Hornet Classic.

Simpson University is a part of the National Association of Interscholastic Athletics (NAIA), which is represented by nearly 300 colleges and universities across the nation.
