1/24/06

REDDING, Calif. -- Simpson University has named local high school teacher and coach Bill Joseph as head coach for the
new men's and women's cross-country teams.

In his 10 years as the head coach of the cross-country teams at Foothill High School in Palo Cedro, Joseph and his girls' teams won five straight Northern Section titles and finished in the top three in the state twice. He has also coached numerous individual section champions. In addition to coaching cross-country at Foothill, Coach Joseph is a chemistry and physics teacher.

Joseph will head up both teams that will begin their first season of competition as part of the NAIA's California Pacific Conference in the fall of 2006. Recruiting for the new program has already begun, and Joseph will step in immediately to get the program off the ground.

Simpson announced in mid-December the addition of men's and women's cross-country to their current six intercollegiate programs. It will become the first new program since baseball was added in 1999.

A native of San Jose, Joseph graduated from Sacramento State with a degree on Mechanical Engineering before earning his teaching credential from Simpson.
