November 27, 2006

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University has announced the launch of a new outdoor leadership program beginning in fall 2007 with classes offered to traditional undergraduate students.

Graduates of the new B.A. in Outdoor Leadership from Simpson University will be prepared for careers in adventure based outdoor programs, non-profit agencies, college and community recreation programs, camp administration, guiding, running their own business, and in state and national park systems. The new major combines the development of leadership skills with training in a variety of outdoor and recreational skills. Simpson will also offer an outdoor leadership minor which will complement fields of studies such as, business, education, psychology, natural sciences, and youth ministry.

The outdoor industry in the United States serves 136 million people who spend $18 billion each year in the pursuit of outdoor recreation. The opportunities around Shasta County, as well as the growing need for professionals in the field of outdoor leadership, played a significant role in Simpson choosing this major.

"The Outdoor Leadership major takes advantage of the stunning physical features of Northern California and unparalleled outdoor opportunities while fulfilling Simpson University's commitment to service and leadership development," said Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, Robin Dummer.

The major will include such classes as Experiential Outdoor Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Wilderness Rescue, Rock Climbing, Kayaking, and Backpacking.

"I am thrilled about the addition of the Outdoor Leadership major to the curricular offerings at Simpson University. For those incoming students majoring in Outdoor Leadership, Shasta County is the place to be because of its abundant natural resources such as Whiskeytown Lake, Shasta Lake, the Sacramento River, Castle Crags State Park, and Lassen Volcanic National Park, all providing the perfect location for a wealth of outdoor adventure and recreation training opportunities," said Assistant Professor of Physical Education, Pam Havlick.
