Simpson University to Launch Women's Softball Program

For Immediate Release
February 28, 2007

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University has announced that they will be adding women's softball to their athletic program beginning in the 2008-2009 school year.

"We're really excited about bringing this program to Simpson.  Women's softball is a growing sport," said Mark Pettengill, director of athletics.

The women’s team will compete independently in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).

Pettengill said that women's softball was the number one requested sport among students on campus, which played a significant role in the launch of the new program.

"Softball is a big sport in the Redding community," said Pettengill.  "With the recent expansion in softball facilities at Big Leagues Dreams, it shows that there is a strong emphasis in that area.  I am confident that softball will be a great fit for the university.  We have a lot of good local talent."

Simpson University is currently accepting applications for Head Coach for Women's Softball. The university hopes to hire a coach by September to begin the student athlete recruitment process.

Athletic scholarships will be available.
