Simpson University Students Participate in an Effort to Help Homeless
REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University was one of the more than 42 colleges, churches, and youth groups that participated in San Francisco's Homeless Jubilee on Oct. 28.
Elizabeth Gross, a senior at Simpson University who also serves at student activity coordinator, learned of the Homeless Jubilee from her friends Evan and April Prosser who are pastors at a ministry called the Homeless Church in San Francisco. Gross, who has always had a heart for the homeless, knew that she wanted to volunteer for the event, but she also wanted to coordinate a group of Simpson students to attend as well. After joining forces with campus clubs such as the Social Action Committee, the Redding Street Ministry club, and the Mission Task Force, Elizabeth assembled nearly 35 students who wanted to help.
"I knew that there was an interest in homeless and street ministries here on campus. It's close to the hearts of many Simpson students. It was a great opportunity for us to get involved," said Gross.
The Homeless Jubilee, held in Golden Gate Park focused on serving the homeless in many ways. Volunteers served breakfast and lunch during the event and passed out donated clothing and shoes. Musicians played worship music on a main stage, and churches set up prayer tents around the park. There was even a dog grooming station for pets. More than 800 homeless people were served during the event.
Gross said, "Community service in Redding is very important, but it is equally important to gain a wider scope. One of Simpson University's values is to provide global service and awareness."
After she graduates from Simpson in spring 2007, with a B.A. in Cross Cultural Studies and a minor in psychology, Gross plans to move to San Francisco and continue her work with the Homeless Church.
