- Redding, CA (9/5/2003)

The Simpson University men's soccer team will kick-off their 2003 season today on the road, as they face Bethany College in a 1pm match to be played in Scotts Valley

Second year Head Coach Lee McKenzie is energized with optimism as the season approaches The 2002 soccer team finished last year 7-9-1 and according to McKenzie, this year's squad has given him reason to be excited.

"We have so much depth to our squad this season and are strong at all eleven positions We are very fortunate to be extremely balanced and this should serve as a big strength for us."

Along with that depth, comes the challenge of molding this years team The Vanguards bring in seven newcomers to mesh along with eight returners One of those returners is Sam Koopmans, Simpson's leading scorer from a year ago Koopmans, (So., Auburn, Ca.) had a very impressive freshman campaign in 2002 and should benefit from having a year of Cal-Pac play underneath him as he goes into his sophomore season

In addition, the Vanguards return last year's starting goalkeeper John Walker (Jr., Castro Valley, Ca.) According to McKenzie, Walker has worked hard this off-season in preparation for this year His play will be instrumental in the team's success.

McKenzie points out that along with the team meshing, the Vanguards will have to stay healthy. Furthermore, he feels the team should benefit from some early games to help build the confidence needed to compete in the California Pacific Conference

The Vanguards first home game of the season will be Thursday September 18 against San Jose Christian College Game time is set for 3pm at the Simpson soccer field.
