- Redding, CA (8/25/2003)
Simpson University Athletic Director Linda Spradley has named Sean Porter as the new Women's Volleyball Coach. Porter, a 1999 Simpson University graduate replaces Justin Dee, who left earlier this summer to assume assistant coaching responsibilities at Birmingham Southern College.
Porter, who has been an active follower of the Simpson volleyball program over the past seven years, takes over the helms after a recent coaching stint with Club Shasta in Redding. Porter takes over a Vanguard team that won 23 games and finished third in the nation at last year's NCCAA tournament. A Spokane Washington native, and graduate of Mead High School, Porter is eager about the chance to coach at his alma mater.
"I see this as a great opportunity and I am very excited and optimistic about our team this season", stated Porter.
Porter's wife, Stacy, a former Vanguard player and Simpson graduate, will assist him on the court. Stacy Porter was a key member on the 1999 Vanguard team that won the NCCAA National Championship.
"We are very pleased to have Sean and Stacy take over our volleyball program. They were both well skilled players during their time here at Simpson and have a great understanding of the game," stated Spradley. "In addition, having Sean on campus full time is a huge plus for us and makes him accessible for our athletes."
On top of his coaching duties, Porter works full time at Simpson as a student support counselor for the Aspire program.
The women's volleyball season gets underway on Saturday September 6th with the annual alumni game. Game time is 6pm and will be played on campus at the Heritage Student Life Center.
Simpson University is a Christian liberal arts college, located in Redding Ca., and offers bachelor’s degrees in over 20 majors. Simpson is a member of the California Pacific Conference (Cal-Pac) and has dual national affiliations in the NAIA and NCCAA.
