The men's soccer team likely needs at least a .500 overall record in order to qualify for the NCCAA DII National Tournament.
They took a huge step toward achieving this by knocking off the host William Jessup University Warriors 3-1 on Saturday, snapping a five-game losing streak.
Tony Horner (Sr., Bolivar, OH) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season, and Erly Cornejo (Fr., Riverton, WY) found the net twice for the Vanguards.
Horner added an assist, while Nate Huntisinger and Joel Slagle also assisted on Simpson's goals.
The Vanguards still must win their last three games to finish at .500. William Jessup will make the return trip to Redding nect Saturday (Oct. 16) before Simpson travels to struggling Bethany (Oct. 20).
The biggest test, though, will come on Tuesday (Oct. 12) when the Vanguards host CSU Maritime. The physical Keelhaulers team has knocked off Simpson twice already this year.
