2-0 win over Bethany ensures NCCAA Bid

- (10/22/2004)

The men's soccer team could not have chosen a better time to pick up its first shutout of the season.

Needing a win to ensure a bid to the NCCAA DII National Championship in Kissimee, Florida, the men battled for a 2-0 victory over visiting Bethany College.

Just 17 minutes in, Tony Horner sent a great through ball down the left side.  David Hicks made a run at the keeper and slid one past into the right corner to put Simpson up 1-0.

The Vanguards started the second half strong as well.  Erly Cornejo hit a strong header off a corner kick only to see a Bruin defender clear the ball of the line.  Fortunately, the ball fell to Tony Horner, who hit a volley into the left corner to put Simpson up 2-0.

Much of the second half was a physical battle, which included seven yellow cards.

Daniel Anderson made several key saves from close range and held on for seven saves and his first college shutout.

The men's soccer team leaves November 2nd for Florida.
