Simpson defeates William Jessup in final seconds

The men's soccer team made it three wins in a row as they defeated visiting William Jessup University 2-1 on Saturday.

The Vanguards came out strong and took the lead just 15 minutes in afer David Hicks (So., Auburn) knocked in a beautiful pass across the box from Jason Koopmans (So., Santa Cruz).

The Warriors equalized shortly beore halftime after Jimmy Kingsley converting a penalty shot.

The second half became a physical battle with neither team backing down.  Six yellow card cautions were handed out, including two a piece to Joel Slagle (So., Palo Cedro) and the Warriors Ryan Chepernich, which resulted in their ejections from the game.

With time winding down, Nate Huntsinger (Jr., Grass Valley) lifted a ball over the defense and Jason Koopmans hit it past the goal keeper for the winning goal.

The buzzer sounded nearly at the same time and after a discussion the officials awarded the game-winner to Simpson. 

The Vanguards now travel to Bethany on Wednesday needing their fourth straight to qualify for the NCCAA Tournament.
