Brawley's Effort on Mound in Vain

Simpson falls to Bethany 4-2

Senior Cody Brawley gave up no earned runs over 8 1/3 innings, but the Red Hawks still fell 4-2 to visiting Bethany College on Saturday.

The Bruins first batter Brady Wilkes doubled and reached third on an error before scoring on an infield groundout by brother Mike Wilkes to put Bethany up 1-0 early.

The Red Hawks jumped right back with a run in the bottom of the inningas Colby Radke walked and scored on an RBI double by center fielder Tim Marinello.

In the fourth, Bethany took advantage of a walk, balk, error, and single to plate two runs and take a 3-1 lead.

It stayed that way until the eighth when freshman Lance Stone walked, stole second and was knocked home by Marinello.  Bethany added an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by John Huffman.

Brawley finished after pitching 8 1/3, giving up six hits, striking out five and allowing no earned runs.  Tim Marinello finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a double, and Jeremiah Holcombe was also 2-for-4.

The Red Hawks host Fresno Pacific for a three-game set next weekend.
