Three seniors were honored before the final game of their collegiate careers, but the Simpson University women's soccer team could not pull off an upset as they lost 1-0 to visiting Embry Riddle on Thursday.
Julie Swinburne (Woodland), Amilia Blackwell (Volcano) and Jamie Van Schooten (Redding) have all played in at least 50 games in a Simpson uniform as four-year starters. Swinburne played in her 59th career game on Thursday, setting a new school-record.
Embry Riddle wasted little time getting on the board after the festivities as they netted the opener 13 minutes in on a 2-on-1 break.
Simpson goalie Sarah Lillie (Jr., San Juan Capistrano) kept the Red Hawk in the game in the second half, making eight saves in the period and 10 in the game.
Despite not holding much of the possession throughout the match, Simpson managed several strong opportunities to tie the game. Hannah Davidson (Jr., Culver City) and Swinburne both had solid chances that were turned away by Eagles goalie Brittany Lucero, who made five saves on the day.
Simpson ends their season with a record of 3-13-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the California Pacific Conference.
