Holy Names Shuts Out Red Hawks
Men and women both scoreless
General Sports News - (10/24/2006)
It was a rough day for both the men's and women's Simpson University soccer teams as they were shutout at home to league-leading Holy Names University.
The Lady Red Hawks, missing several starters due to injury and yellow card suspension, gave up four second-half goals in a 6-0 defeat. After giving up an early goal seven minutes in, Simpson played some tough-nosed defense and looked dangerous at times on offense.
But the lack of depth for Simpson and the talent of Holy Names came through in the second half as Lauren Vonnegut and Roccio Ferree notched two goals each.
It was senior day for the men as David Hicks (Auburn), Tyler Rowley (Elk Grove), Joel Slagle (Palo Cedro), and Jason Koopmans (Santa Cruz) all were honored in their final home games as Red Hawks.
Again it was an early goal that left Simpson with a hold to dig out of in just the eighth minute. The Red Hawks did have a chance to get back in it as they were awarded a penalty kick in the 25th minute. However, Holy Names keeper Andreas Lindstrom came up huge with a diving save that eventually preserved the shut out.
Holy Names got a pair of outstanding goals in the middle of the match as Joaquin Escoto nailed a half-volley from 30-yards out, and Edwin Pouzeaud drilled a 30-yard free kick into the top of the net in the 70th minute.
Both Holy Names' teams stay undefeated in Cal Pac play and have a showdown with Dominican on Saturday to determine the conference champion.
Simpson's men look to rebound as they travel to Pacific Union for their season finale on Friday, while the women play host to Embry Riddle on Thursday for senior day.
