History Department

The mission of the History Department at Simpson University is to prepare Christian historians for their educational, professional, and spiritual callings. Within the context of a Christian liberal arts education, the history and social science majors will help hone students' critical thinking, research, and writing skills. The majors demonstrate how the past can lead to a better awareness of the present by providing a basic understanding of human nature and the nature of God. The majors also equip students for professions in politics, education, human development, and the mission field as well as for entering a graduate program in history, law, public policy, education, and seminary. It is the goal of the department to inspire and guide students along their educational, professional, and spiritual paths by providing competent and compassionate teaching, advising, and mentoring.

Upon completion of the history major, students will be able to:

  • Appreciate the people, cultures, and nations of the world through their historical development.
  • Identify and interpret the major historic periods in the United States/European/Non-Western concentration they have chosen.
  • Inculcate critical thinking, research, and writing skills.
  • Apply various technologies, methodologies, and schools of thought to historical research and writing.
  • Distinguish themselves for future professional and graduate work.
