REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University head volleyball coach Melissa Church announced the signing of two student-athletes, Shelby Sweatt of Palo Cedro and Jackie Nixon of Modesto. The pair signed letters of intent to play for the Red Hawks during the 2007-2008 academic year.

"We're excited to have signed these two student-athletes who will both make great additions to the team," said Church. "Sweatt is a strong local recruit who already has chemistry with the team and who will provide much-needed height. Nixon is a rare find; she's a well-rounded player who will have a strong presence."

Sweatt, a Foothill High graduate, will join her sister, Brittany Baldwin, on the Red Hawks. She said she chose to sign with Simpson University for the opportunity to play for Church.

"Coach Church knows the game of volleyball and she is a good role model," said Sweatt. "I'm excited to play for her at Simpson University."

Sweatt plans to earn a bachelor's degree in communications.

Nixon, a graduate of Beyer High School in Modesto, previously played for Ronnie Robbins, where she helped her team win the 2006-2007 Modesto Metro Conference and she was named 1st Team All-Conference.

Nixon plans to double major in education and youth ministries.

Both student-athletes will receive scholarships from Simpson University.
